Hopi women gathered on top of the wall watching a ceremony in progress at Mesa number one, known as Walpi. They are wearing their hair in the “squash blossom” style.

One of the Hopi grandmothers at a teaching of the World Council of Elders told me, “That is how we wore our hair before we were married.” I think we now know where director George Lucas got the idea for Princess Leah’s hairdo seen in his movie, “Star Wars”. Flagstaff Mountain can be seen in the background. The great photographer Edward Weston called this one of the 10 best photographs ever taken. – Mountain Hawk –
