Edward S. Curtis: “Homeward” Orotone Photograph. Issued in preparation for his monumental “The North American Indian”, Edward Sheriff Curtis of Seattle created this 11″ x 14″ gold tone photograph on glass which he signed in the lower left corner. It depicts a group of five Native Americans paddling toward shore on an overcast day. The back board has the original label describing the photos in this series, as well as this one, in particular: ” Homeward. A canoe scene on Puget Sound. This type of canoe was used along the Pacific Coast on the mouth of the Columbia River to Yakutat Bay, Alaska.” It is housed in the original 19″ x 16″ bat-wing frame and is in excellent condition.
